Introduction —

Chapter 1 of the KP Textbook Board 9th Class Physics book (new syllabus) is "Physical Quantities and Measurements". In this chapter we learn what physics is, what physical quantities are, the International System of Units (SI), prefixes, scientific notation, common measuring instruments, errors in measurement and significant figures. These notes are short, exam-focused and bilingual.

Key Notes —

1. Physics and its Branches —

Physics is the branch of science that deals with matter, energy and the interaction between them.

Main branches: Mechanics (motion of objects and forces), Thermodynamics (heat and its conversion into other forms of energy), Sound/Acoustics (sound waves), Optics (light), Electricity and Magnetism, Atomic Physics (structure of atoms), Nuclear Physics (nucleus of the atom), Quantum Physics and Relativity.

2. Physical Quantities —

A physical quantity is a quantity that can be measured. It has a numerical value (magnitude) and a unit, e.g. length = 5 m.

Base quantities are those quantities on the basis of which other quantities are expressed. In SI there are 7 base quantities. Derived quantities are those quantities which are expressed in terms of base quantities, e.g. speed, area, volume, density, force.

3. SI Base Quantities and Units — SI

The International System of Units (SI) is used all over the world. Its 7 base quantities and units are:

  • Length — metre (m)
  • Mass — kilogram (kg)
  • Time — second (s)
  • Electric current — ampere (A)
  • Thermodynamic temperature — kelvin (K)
  • Amount of substance — mole (mol)
  • Luminous intensity — candela (cd)

Derived units are formed from base units, e.g. area: m², volume: m³, speed: m s⁻¹, acceleration: m s⁻², density: kg m⁻³, force: newton (N) = kg m s⁻².

4. Prefixes —

Prefixes are words or letters added before a unit to show multiples or sub-multiples of the unit in powers of ten.

  • tera (T) = 10¹²
  • giga (G) = 10⁹
  • mega (M) = 10⁶
  • kilo (k) = 10³
  • centi (c) = 10⁻²
  • milli (m) = 10⁻³
  • micro (μ) = 10⁻⁶
  • nano (n) = 10⁻⁹
  • pico (p) = 10⁻¹²

Example: Convert 5 km into metres. 1 km = 10³ m, so 5 km = 5 × 10³ m = 5000 m.

5. Scientific Notation —

In scientific notation a number is written as a × 10ⁿ, where 1 ≤ a < 10 and n is an integer (positive, negative or zero). It makes very large and very small numbers easy to write.

Examples: 150 000 000 = 1.5 × 10⁸ (decimal moved 8 places to the left, so the power is positive 8). 0.000345 = 3.45 × 10⁻⁴ (decimal moved 4 places to the right, so the power is negative 4).

6. Measuring Instruments —

Least count is the smallest value that an instrument can measure accurately.

(a) Metre Rule — میٹر رول

A metre rule is 1 m long and its least count is 1 mm (0.1 cm). While reading, the eye must be exactly above (perpendicular to) the mark to avoid parallax error.

It has a main scale and a sliding vernier scale. In a common vernier, 10 vernier divisions are equal to 9 mm, so one vernier division = 0.9 mm. Least count = 1 mm − 0.9 mm = 0.1 mm = 0.01 cm. It can measure the length, external diameter, internal diameter and depth of objects.

Reading = main scale reading + (coinciding vernier division × least count).

Zero error: When the jaws are closed and the zero of the vernier scale does not coincide with the zero of the main scale, the instrument has a zero error. If the vernier zero is on the right of the main-scale zero, the zero error is positive; if on the left, it is negative. Corrected reading = observed reading − zero error (with its sign).

Worked example: Main scale reading = 2.30 cm, the 6th vernier division coincides, least count = 0.01 cm, zero error = +0.02 cm.
Observed reading = 2.30 + (6 × 0.01) = 2.30 + 0.06 = 2.36 cm.
Corrected reading = 2.36 − (+0.02) = 2.34 cm.

A screw gauge measures very small lengths such as the diameter of a thin wire or the thickness of a sheet. It has a main scale on the sleeve and a circular scale on the thimble. Pitch is the distance moved by the spindle in one complete rotation of the thimble. Least count = pitch ÷ number of divisions on the circular scale. For pitch 1 mm and 100 divisions: least count = 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01 mm = 0.001 cm.

Worked example: Main scale reading = 5 mm, circular scale division in line = 28, least count = 0.01 mm.
Reading = 5 + (28 × 0.01) = 5 + 0.28 = 5.28 mm.

A measuring cylinder is used to measure the volume of a liquid. Keep it on a flat surface and keep the eye level with the bottom of the meniscus for water (top of the meniscus for mercury). The volume of an irregular solid (e.g. a stone) is found by the rise of water level: volume of stone = final reading − initial reading.

A stopwatch is used to measure short time intervals. It may be mechanical (analogue) or digital.

7. Errors in Measurement —

Random errors occur due to unpredictable changes (e.g. in surroundings or in the observer's reading). They are reduced by taking several readings and finding their average. Systematic errors occur due to a fault in the instrument or method (e.g. zero error); they affect all readings in the same way and are removed by applying zero correction or calibrating the instrument. Parallax error occurs when the eye is not placed perpendicular to the scale.

8. Precision and Accuracy —

Accuracy means how close a measured value is to the true value. Precision means how close repeated measurements are to each other. An instrument with a smaller least count gives more precise readings.

9. Significant Figures —

Significant figures are all the accurately known digits in a measurement plus the first doubtful digit.

Rules:

  • All non-zero digits are significant: 345 has 3.
  • Zeros between non-zero digits are significant: 2005 has 4.
  • Zeros before the first non-zero digit (leading zeros) are not significant: 0.0045 has 2.
  • Zeros at the end after a decimal point are significant: 4.50 has 3; 0.00450 has 3.
  • In scientific notation, all digits of "a" are significant: 6.02 × 10²³ has 3.

Rounding off: If the first digit to be dropped is less than 5, the last kept digit stays the same (e.g. 3.142 → 3.14). If it is greater than 5, or it is 5 followed by non-zero digits, the last kept digit is increased by 1 (e.g. 2.3476 → 2.35). For the special case when the dropped digit is exactly 5, follow the rule given in your textbook.

Important Short Questions —

Q1. Differentiate between base and derived quantities.
Ans: Base quantities are the quantities on the basis of which other quantities are expressed (e.g. length, mass, time). Derived quantities are expressed in terms of base quantities (e.g. speed = distance ÷ time).

Q2. What is least count? Write the least count of a vernier callipers and a screw gauge.
Ans: Least count is the smallest value an instrument can measure accurately. Vernier callipers (common type, 10 vernier divisions): 0.01 cm (0.1 mm). Screw gauge (pitch 1 mm, 100 divisions): 0.001 cm (0.01 mm).

Q3. What is zero error? How is it corrected?
Ans: In vernier callipers, if the zero of the vernier scale does not coincide with the zero of the main scale when the jaws are closed, it is called zero error. (In a screw gauge, zero error exists if the zero of the circular scale does not coincide with the index line when the spindle touches the anvil.) Corrected reading = observed reading − zero error (with sign).

Q4. Why do we use scientific notation?
Ans: To write very large and very small numbers in a short and clear form, e.g. 0.000345 = 3.45 × 10⁻⁴. It also shows the number of significant figures clearly.

Q5. Differentiate between random and systematic errors.
Ans: Random errors occur due to unpredictable changes and are reduced by taking the average of many readings. Systematic errors occur due to a fault in the instrument or method (e.g. zero error) and are removed by correction or calibration.

Q6. Differentiate between accuracy and precision.
Ans: Accuracy is the closeness of a measured value to the true value. Precision is the closeness of repeated measurements to each other.

Q7. How many significant figures are in 0.00450 and 2005?
Ans: 0.00450 has 3 significant figures (4, 5 and the last zero). 2005 has 4 significant figures.
